OEE = Availability × Performance × Quality

It expresses how close you are to perfect production (producing only good parts, as fast as possible, with. r. no stop time).

1. Availability – Measures equipment uptime vs. planned production time.

   • Formula: (Run Time ÷ Planned Production Time)
   • Losses: Breakdowns, changeovers, setup delays.

2. Performance – Measures actual output vs. ideal speed.

   • Formula: (Ideal Cycle Time × Total Pieces) ÷ Run Time
   • Losses: Minor stops, slow cycles.

   

3. Quality – Measures good output vs. total output.

   • Formula: (Good Pieces ÷ Total Pieces)
   • Losses: Defects, rework, scrap.

Application in Cold-Chain Logistics

• Availability: Uptime of refrigeration systems, conveyor lines, reefer trucks.
• Performance: Actual throughput of pallets vs. designed throughput per hour.
• Quality: Deliveries made within temperature compliance, damage-free and on time.

Example:

If a cold store’s blast freezer is available 90% of the time, running at 85% speed, and 95% of output is within temperature specs,

OEE = 0.90 × 0.85 × 0.95 = 72.7%

→ This means there’s a 27.3% performance loss to recover.
